Comments on my diary: China Journey 2007

Comments on my diary: China Journey 2007

Looking back at my journey:

For me, connecting with the ancestors is becoming a very important issue.
Not only the faraway mainland china connection, but also the more recent chinese diaspora to Java and Holland.

Often I feel on a gut-level during a meeting with somebody with these same roots: we are related, a few hunderd years ago…

The more I research on the shamanic roots of the chinese way of living, the more I discover:
chinese ancestor worship, gongfu (animal-styles, bagua), fengshui, divination (yi jing).

Fragments of my diary: China Journey august 2007:
At this moment I’m in Chongqing, the middle of china.
Already had a intense time in Shanghai-Yangtze river-Fengjie, later on I will visit Xian and Beijing.

Many things here remind me of Indonesia: the way people walk, the smells on the street, the shops, the slums.
I often have to explain that I do not speak chinese, but that my ancestors came from here.

Shanghai is weird: the contrast between sf and slum is great.

On the Yangtze I realised how this river is connected to chinese history. The great dam has already caused whole villages being displaced to outer provinces like Tibet and Xinjiang, imagine the suffering of the farmers of the displaced people but also on the receiving end in the outer provinces who have to cope with new invaders.
Many old ways are being destroyed in the name of progress.
At the dam I touched mother earth in a rock garden, it made me cry.

At Fengjie, city of ghosts, made for all the spirits from china, I realised how much has been destroyed by the cultural revolution.

Chongching is also very large and polluted, my stay here will be short.

I am looking forward to visit Xian, the tomb of the first emperor.
And of course in Beijing I will visit the great wall and TianAnMen square.

I hope to be back safe and well during Lammas…

…later…

Xi-an:

Terracotta army in the First Emperors’ tomb.
He was a real monster. Yeah, he ‘pacified’ China, but at the cost of many lives.

The Great Mosque of the Hui minority, fascinating to see all kinds of mythic creatures (like dragons etc) depicted despite the Muslim ban on depicting creatures.
Somewhere during the Tang-dynasty the Hui were invited in as mercenary troops to surpress peasant revolts, but now the Muslims are being distrusted as a possible source of terrorism.
Well, the Uighur in Xinjiang and Kazakhstan have cause to rebel against the pressure to be ‘assimilated’ as the Tibetans.

Beijing:

TianAnMen! Standing here, realising how the students’ movement was put down with tanks and guns, moves me to tears.
Weird to realize, that our guide (age 27) has never seen the pictures of that drama.
I brought a origami whitecrane all the way to Holland to here, originally to place it somewhere on this square to honour the fallen, but it was too crowded, so I gave it to our guide with the words: ‘in remembrance of the students that died, remember!’
…
Later on we had a tour through a Hutong, another ancient way of living that’s disappearing in the name of progress & profit: a network of old alleys & houses that form small downtown communities around a common well. The guide showed us a model-family (state-approved on show for tourists of course) who had many modern-day thingies like tv, refrigerator, dvd-player, piano; receiving tourists must be very profitable!.
…
Met some nice shopkeepers: one of them was very delighted to hear that my ancestors came from her home province Fujien, she was able to tell me that the dialect of my predecessors is still common in the area of the MinNan, another piece of the puzzle found!
….

Back home again: unpacking, cleaning myself & my stuff, opening my mailbox, calling friends.
Feels like I need to see some dear friends soon to reconnect to this land again!

When I was in china, I recoqnized many things I also saw in Java: the way people dress & move, the smells, the food, the housings. I never realised the great influence of the oversea chinese on the Javanese culture!”

The Troll-Tear

The night was very dark, with a Full Moon hanging in the cloud-filled sky above.
The air was crisp with the feel of late Autumn and the doorway between the worlds was wide open.
Carved pumpkins sat on the porches of the houses in the little town, and the laughter of children dressed in costumes could be heard from the streets.

It was a sad time for Beth as she climbed the little hill behind her house.
In her arms was her cat and friend Smoky, carefully wrapped in his favorite blanket.
A little grave was already dug on the hill, waiting, for Smoky had died that day.

“Do you want me to go with you?” Beth’s father had asked.

“No, I want to go by myself,” she answered. “I dug his grave beside MacDougal’s at the top of the hill.”
Beth clearly remembered when their dog MacDougal had died after being hit by a car.

Beth stopped at the top of the hill and knelt beside the little grave.
She carefully laid Smoky’s blanket-wrapped form in the earth and covered it with dirt, laying several large rocks on the top.
Then she cried and cried.

“Oh, Smoky, I miss you so much!” Beth looked up at the Moon, tears streaming down her cheeks. “Why did you die?”

“It was his time to rejoin the Mother,” said a deep, gentle voice in the darkness.

“Who said that?” Beth looked around but saw no one.

“Dying is part of the cycle of life, you know.” One of the boulders on the hill stirred into life.

“Who are you?” The moonlight shone down on the little woman, and Beth could see she was not human.

“I’m a troll-wife,” said the creature as she came to site across from Beth. “This is a sad night for both of us, girl. I, too, came to this hill to bury a friend.”
The troll-wife wiped a crystal tear from her cheek. “The squirrel was very old. Still it makes me sad.”

Beth stared at the troll-wife. The little woman was the color of rock in the moonlight, her hair like long strands of moss, her bright eyes like shining crystals. She wore a dress woven of oak leaves and tree bark.

“The squirrel and I lived together for a long time,” the troll-wife said. ” We often talked to your cat when he was hunting here on the hill. Smoky and I were friends. I shall miss him, too.”
The little woman patted Smoky ‘s grave gently, “Sleep well, little friend. When you are rested, we shall talk together again.”

“But he’s dead,” Beth said, her voice choked with tears.

“Child, this is Samhain. Don’t you know the ancient secrets of this sacred time of year?”
The troll-wife motioned for Beth to come and sit beside her. “It is true that our friends have gone into a world where we can no longer physically touch them, but the Mother has given us other ways of communicating with them.
We can do this any time, but the time of Samhain is the easiest.”

“I don’t understand how this can be done,” Beth said, “or why Samhain makes it easier.”

“At this time of year,” the troll-wife answered, “the walls between this world and the world of souls and spirits are very thin.
If we quiet and listen, we can hear our loved ones and they can hear us. We talk, not with spoken words, but with the heart and mind.”

“Isn’t that just imagination?” Beth looked down at Smoky’s grave, tears once more coming into her eyes. “Like my thinking I can feel MacDougal get up on my bed at night like he used to?”

“Sometimes it is, but mostly it is not imagination, only our friends come to see us in their spirit bodies.”
The troll-wife reached up her hand and patted something Beth couldn’t see on her shoulder. “Like my friend the raven. He is here now.”

Beth looked hard and saw a thin form of hazy moonlight on the troll-wife’s shoulder. “I’ve seen something like that at the foot of my bed where MacDougal used to sleep.”
She whispered. “I thought I was dreaming.”
She jumped as something nudged her arm. When she looked down, nothing was there.

The troll-wife smiled. “Close your eyes and think of MacDougal,” she said. ” He has been waiting a long time for you to see him.”

Beth closed her eyes and, at once, the form of her little dog came into her mind.
His tail wagged with happiness.
She felt a wave of love come from him, and she sent her love back.
Then she felt the dog lie down against her leg.

“Can I do this with Smoky?” Beth asked.

“Not yet,” the troll-wife answered. “He needs to sleep a while and rest. Then he will come to you. This gives Smoky time to adjust to his new world, and you time to grieve for him. It is not wrong to grieve, but we must not grieve forever.”

“I never thought of it that way,” Beth said. “It’s kind of like they moved away, and we can only talk to them on the phone.”

“It is this way with all creatures, not just animals.” The troll-wife stood up and held out an hand to Beth. “Will you join me, human girl? Although I buried my friend squirrel this night, I still must dance and sing to all my friends and ancestors who have gone on their journey into the other world. For this is a time to honor the ancestors.”

Beth joined the troll-wife in the ancient slow troll dances around the top of the little hill in the moonlight.
She watched quietly while the troll-wife called out troll-words to the four directions, words Beth couldn’t understand.
Deep in her heart the girl felt the power of the strange words and knew they were given in honor and love by the little troll-wife.

When the troll-wife was finished with her ritual, she hugged Beth. “Go in peace, human child,” she said. “And remember what I have told you about the ancient secret of Samhain.”

“I will,” Beth answered. “Will I ever see you again?”

“Whenever the Moon is Full, I will be here,” the little troll-wife said. ” And especially at Samhain.”

“I wish I had something to give you.” Beth hugged the little woman. “You have taught me so much.” She felt the tears come to her eyes again.

“Let us exchange tears for our lost friends.” The troll-wife reached up a rough finder and caught a tear as it fell from Beth’s eye. The tear glistened on her finger. The troll-wife gently touched her finger to her cloak, and Beth’s tear shone there like a diamond in the moonlight.

Beth reached up carefully and caught one of the troll-wife’s tears as it slid down her rough cheek. It turned into a real crystal in her hand.

“Remember the secret of Samhain, and remember me,” the troll-wife said softly as she disappeared into the darkness.

Beth walked back down the hill, the crystal clutched in her hand.
Her father was waiting for her on the porch.

“Are you all right?” her father asked as he gave Beth a hug.

“I will be,” she answered. She opened her hand under the porch light and saw a perfect, tear-shaped crystal lying there.

“Did you find something?” her father asked.

“A troll-tear,” Beth answered, and her father smiled.
For he also knew the little troll-wife and the secret of Samhain

Drill, Drill, Drill

Drill, Drill, Drill

I am having Sarah Palin nightmares.

I dreamt last night that she
was a member of a club where they rode snowmobiles
and wore the claws of drowned
and starved polar bears around their necks.

I have a particular thing for Polar Bears.

Maybe it’s their snowy whiteness or their bigness
or the fact that they live in the arctic
or that I have never seen one in person
or touched one.

Maybe it is the fact that they live
so comfortably on ice.

Whatever it is, I need the polar bears.

I don’t like raging at women.

I am a Feminist and have spent my life
trying to build community,
help empower women
and stop violence against them.

It is hard to write about Sarah Palin.
This is why the Sarah Palin choice
was all the more insidious and cynical.

The people who made this choice
count on the goodness and solidarity of Feminists.

But everything Sarah Palin believes in
and practices is antithetical to Feminism
which for me is part of one story —
connected to saving the earth,
ending racism, empowering women,
giving young girls options, opening our minds,
deepening tolerance, and ending violence and war.

I believe that the McCain/Palin ticket is one
of the most dangerous choices of my lifetime,
and should this country choose those candidates
the fall-out may be so great,
the destruction so vast in so many areas
that America may never recover.

But what is equally disturbing is the impact
that duo would have on the rest of the world.

Unfortunately, this is not a joke.

In my lifetime I have seen the clownish, the inept,
the bizarre be elected to the presidency with regularity.

Sarah Palin does not believe in evolution.

I take this as a metaphor.
In her world and the world of Fundamentalists
nothing changes or gets better or evolves.

She does not believe in global warming.
The melting of the arctic, the storms that are destroying
our cities, the pollution and rise of cancers,
are all part of God’s plan.

She is fighting to take the polar bears off the endangered species list.
The earth, in Palin’s view, is here to be taken and plundered.
The wolves and the bears are here to be shot and plundered.
The oil is here to be taken and plundered.
Iraq is here to be taken and plundered.
As she said herself of the Iraqi war,
“It was a task from God.”

Sarah Palin does not believe in abortion.

She does not believe women who are raped
and incested and ripped open against their will
should have a right to determine whether they have their rapist’s baby or not.
She obviously does not believe in sex education or birth control.
I imagine her daughter was practicing abstinence
and we know how many babies that makes.

Sarah Palin does not much believe in thinking.
From what I gather she has tried to ban books from the library,
has a tendency to dispense with people who think independently.
She cannot tolerate an environment of ambiguity and difference.

This is a woman who could and might very well
be the next president of the United States.

She would govern one of the most diverse populations on the earth.

Sarah believes in guns.
She has her own custom Austrian hunting rifle.
She has been known to kill 40 caribou at a clip.
She has shot hundreds of wolves from the air.

Sarah believes in God.
That is of course her right, her private right.

But when God and Guns come together in the public sector,
when war is declared in God’s name,
when the rights ofwomen are
denied in his name,
that is the end of separation of church and
state and the undoing of everything America has ever tried to be.

I write to my sisters.

I write because I believe we hold this election in our hands.

This vote is a vote that will determine the future not just of the U.S.,
but of the planet.

It will determine whether we create policies to save the earth
or make it forever uninhabitable for humans.

It will determine whether we move towards dialogue and diplomacy in the world
or whether we escalate violence through invasion, undermining and attack.

It will determine whether we go for oil, strip mining, coal burning
or invest our money in alternatives that will free us from dependency and destruction.

It will determine if money gets spent on education and healthcare
or whether we build more and more methods of killing.

It will determine whether America is a free open tolerant society
or a closed place of fear, fundamentalism and aggression.

If the Polar Bears don’t move you to go
and do everything in your power to get Obama elected,
then consider the chant that filled the hall
after Palin spoke at the RNC,
“Drill Drill Drill.”

I think of teeth when I think of drills.

I think of rape.

I think of destruction.

I think of domination.

I think of military exercises
that force mindless repetition,
emptying the brain of analysis,
doubt, ambiguity or dissent.

I think of pain.

Do we want a future of drilling?

More holes in the ozone,
in the floor of the sea,
more holes in our thinking,
in the trust between nations and peoples,
more holes in the fabric of this precious thing we call life?

The Spiral Dance Ritual

The Spiral Dance Ritual

San Francisco Reclaiming’s annual Halloween ritual brings together over a thousand people to dance the spiral of regeneration.
A glimpse of a true Pagan ritual.

What is The Spiral Dance?

The holiday popularly known as Halloween is the time of year known to witches as Samhain, when the veil is thin between the worlds of the living and the dead.
We gather to remember and honor our ancestors, our Beloved Dead, and all those who have crossed over.
As we mourn for those we love who have died this year, we also mourn the losses and pain suffered by the Earth, our Mother.
Yet even as we grieve we also remember and honor the sacred cycle of life, death, rebirth and regeneration, celebrating the births of our children born this year, and our own vital connections to the Earth and each other, in which we ground our hope.

The first Spiral Dance ritual was held in 1979 to celebrate the publication of Starhawk’s book, The Spiral Dance (Harper and Row) Starhawk, a founding member of the Reclaiming Collective, wrote the original script which remains the heart of the ritual, though it has been altered and embellished over the years by her and many other people.
Traditionally, the Spiral Dance calls upon the energy and talents of musicians, artists, poets, dancers, crafts people, singers, technicians, priests and priestesses from the Reclaiming Community and beyond, and we are grateful to everyone who helps to create this magical experience we all share.
This is a participatory ritual and pageant which has become a central event in the Wheel of the Year for many in the Reclaiming Community and beyond.
Over 1,200 people join in this observance of the Witches’ New year, and the event raises funds which support the work of Reclaiming throughout the year.
When we dance the Spiral, young and old together, we remember and honor our own past at that same time that we renew our vision and embrace the future.
Let it begin now!

I really would like to celebrate this with my beloved ones!

Shamanism:: Foundation for Shamanic Studies founded by Michael Harner

Shamanism:: Foundation for Shamanic Studies founded by Michael Harner

The Shaman is usually regarded as a healer as well as a mediator between the
normal – ordinary – world or reality, OR, and the spiritual world, the so
called
non-ordinary reality (NOR). He is an expert for communication with
the helping
spirits by changing his everyday consciousness to an altered
state and
“journeying” to NOR to retrieve power and information for his
clients and
tasks.

“Shamanism is a path of knowledge, not of faith, and that knowledge
cannot come from me or anyone else in this reality.
To acquire that knowledge,
including the knowledge of the reality of the spirits, it is necessary
to step through the shaman’s doorway and acquire empirical evidence.”
…

“The evidence was staring me in the face for a long time, but I didn’t see it; that in perhaps 90 percent of the world’s shamanic cultures they use a monotonous percussive sound to enter altered states of consciousness, rather than significant psychedelics”.
Michael Harner

Using the empirical method, I agree with the idea that drumming works. Chanting, singing, whirling, dancing also works.
Maybe the critical ingredient is in the repetitive excercise

Runen magie

Runen magie

“I know a twelfth one if I see,
up in a tree,
a dangling corpse in a noose,
I can so carve and colour the runes,
that the man walks
And talks with me”

Tao Te Ching the definite edition

Tao Te Ching the definite edition
